Hi folks. I use an MRS8 everyday. The #1 button weakened and partially fell into the case. It won't press the contacts anymore. Gently use a plastic knife (cut it down to fit into the small square hole). You will feel the contact and the lights will still function. The contact area is in the upper area of the square. I hope I have helped someone who has, or may encounter this common problem. Happy Mixing.

I bought a used MRS 802 with the burner installed and also a mic/power source. I hate to read manuals, so if I could get a shortcut mehtod to do the below I would be SOOOO greatful... all I want to do is load a soundtrack (CD track) and then add my vocal to it and mix it down to a file or cd. I have figured out how to load the track into the project, now ready to add a vocal and then get it to cd or my PC. This is all I will ever do with this unit... thanks!

I am totally frustrated. I am trying to bounce the drum track onto an empty track. The card is new 2GB, with plenty of room on it. I have gone over the instructions 50 times. I simply do not get a display reading from the destination track (7/8) that I am trying to bounce onto. I also tried to work this out on a smaller card 128MB and saw a display reading and got a successful bounce for about 30 seconds and then the drum track recording died out. I don't know what I am missing.
Note, the tracks on the larger card were copies from originals that I had previously copied on my computer as a backup. The data.file and the rhythm seq files are in there.
Please help me if you can. I cannot go forward with my music. I am ready to try any alternative. I am desperate.
Regards, Tom

apologies for the slow reply. As stated on the front page, there is already a forum that can answer these questions quickly:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/zoommrs8/
As for the Card issue: The MRS8 does not support 2 GB.

Being a novice to home recording, I'm sure I must be doing something wrong, however I think I'm following the instructions correctly. This is my problem: I am trying to record my guitar on 1 track and my singing on another. I try to select track 1 and track 3 as per the instruction, this does not happen. I"m able to select track 1 & 2, however the guitar and voice are on both tracks when played back. Any guidance will be most appreciated.MAHALO!

"Hi everybody. I've been using the internal mic on my MRS-8 but im getting tired of it (picking up too much of the room etc). Can anybody help recommend me a good microphone that would suit my Zoom and give me good quality vocal track?
thank you" The internal mic on the MRS-8 is great for "scratch tracks" or quick ideas, but not appropriate for critical recording. Since the MRS-8 does not provide phantom power for condenser mics, you are limited to dynamics, unless you use phantom power from an external mixer or ad-hoc power supply like this http://www.zzounds.com/item--ARTPHANII Large diaphram electret condeser and true condenser microphones are best suited to recording vocals, but you can achieve good results with dynamics as well. I use an EV N/D767 http://www.zzounds.com/item--ELVND767A for recording with the MRS-8 with great results. The advantage of this mic is that it's supercardioid pickup pattern is very "tight," thus effectively rejecting room noises and reflections from walls, etc. This mic also has a lot more "sparkle" in high frequencies compared to a Shure SM or Beta 58. Some users describe it's sound as very "condenser-ish!" Go to your local big-box music store and ask to try some dynamic vocal mics. They should be willing to patch a headphone mix for you to demo them. Ask them to keep all the mic EQ's flat on the console and then you can narrow your search by comparing a few at once. SING into the mics....speaking is not going to represent how you will use the mic. Since everyone's voice is, in fact, a unique instrument, you will likely discover that one microphone over another may be better suited to your vocal timbre. Remember also that frequency responses change based on your proximity or distance from the microphone so use the same distance for each test. Further note: Try using your clothes closet as a "vocal booth!" Both the acoustic dampening of the clothes and the isolation are sure to improve your vocal tracks!! When recording, remember to use a boom stand and pop filter when possible. Hope this helps!!

Thanks I purchased a whole bunch of equipment within the last year, and most of it Im doing fine with but the zoom, other than basic recording. like i said "the terminology" Thats one thing I love about Yamaha products "keep it simple stupid" mentality Yes, I had a few years back a zoom drum machine which was awesome
I really appreciate your help and will be signing up because Im frustrated I can compose music but with todays technology its gets complicated. heres my website if you want to hear the zoom hd16 in action especially my latest song "Kaylahs Dream" a jazz/pop tune waiting for lyrics/vocals

I wrote these guides to understanding multitracking and vTakes a while ago and reading them back, I am not happy with the annalogy of dictaphones! I hope that someone with a better understanding of the technical side of things can provide much better guides!

I think you would have to define these other concepts separately. Besides, I think most people reading the guides would have some understanding of multitracking. Maybe the most valuable topics might be how to get "the most" out of your MRS-8, etc. I would like to post a primer on general recording techniques. These are essential to turning out a great recording.

Just wanted to point out a possible error in the MRS-8 Guide for Mixdown. The guide states that before bouncing the tracks to the Master track that you should "Adjust each Channels faders in turn while listening to the whole mix. Get an even balance between the sounds. Run through the whole thing. Can you identify each instrument? Is one instrument over powering the others?" Then it goes on to suggest the following: "Don't touch any of the faders, they will affect the Mixdown." This, IMHO is not the best advice. My suggestion is to PRACTICE the Mixdown several times, during which you WILL surely MIX by ADJUSTING the FADERS. This is the essence of MIXING! An exsample would be a live "fade-out" of a vocal or subtle raising of a signature guitar lick. Putting your HANDS on the FADERS and MANIPULATING them is essential to the craft of MIXING. The benefit of the MRS-8's Master V-Takes, is that you can create several MIXES and compare them to determine the finest one. I felt compelled to mention this as I am employed as a Sound Engineer and must MIX ever time while on the job. No amount of compression or limiting will allow you to totally "set the levels" and be done with it. In digital studios consoles are equipped with moving, or "flying" faders which help an engineer MIX the final cut. Hope this helps and gives some of you the "freedom" to MIX while MIXING DOWN!!

Is it neccessary to transfer the bass line to a spare track , like the drums, so that it is audible with the card reader software? If so, any possibility of a demo some time? Thanks

Yes.
The bass is midi based, just like the Drums. The information is not transfered when using the card manager software. To get the bass on a real track you need to bounce
Hoping to get some animated demos up soon. something I'm working on.... until then, heres the quick guide:
Mute everything but the Bass. Pick a spare channel and make the status key red. press the Bounce button so it lights up red. rewind to beginning. press record then play. listen and wait for finish. press stop. PRESS THE BOUNCE BUTTON SO THE LIGHT GOES OUT.
bingo!

When you enter a formula in FAST, say 0+(2x3) or whatever, does the "0" correspond to patter 500? and "2" is 502 etc? If not, what then? Thanks.

the "0" represents pattern "000" (which is "08beat01" if I remember rightly)
your example could also be written:
000+(002x3)
You can get rid of the the unnecesary 0's. So "004" can be written "4". "097" could be written "97" anything above "100" would have to be entered in full.
if unsure, always enter the pattern number in full.

There is already a well established forum that covers Home recording and Zoom equipment that can be found here:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/zoommrs8/
Please use the forums on the survival guide pages for topics relating to the wiki and its content, not general home recording questions.
many thanks, Jimis
