AKA: Overdubbing
So you have
recorded on to a track. Now we are ready for the best bit! We are going to record a different piece of music while listening to the first bit. Then play them both back at the same time (Sorry if I am sound obvious but I want to keep this guide usable to everyone!).
If you want to swap instruments now you will need to reset the levels as described in
Set up.
Might be an idea to stick with the same instrument for now to save time - your call!
The basic procedure is identical to the previous article but we need to select a different channel to record through.
I'll assume you used Channel 1 for the first bit.
- Make sure that Channel 1 is set to play - Press the [STATUS KEY] until it is lit green.
- Press the [STATUS KEY] of Channel 2 until it is lit red
- Press [PLAY] and you will hear the rhythm section and the content of Track 1 recorded earlier.
- Practice! Play along. Get a feel for things.
- You may want to adjust the faders to get a comfortable sound. Make sure you can clearly hear all the parts.
- You can hit [STOP] - [ZERO] then [PLAY] as many times as you want until you are ready.
- When you are ready hit [STOP] then [ZERO] then [RECORD]
- The system is now in standby mode, ready to record. Last chance to check that the track that already contains a recording is set to play.
- Hit [PLAY]. The click counter will sound again. 1.2.3.4
- Play along. Have fun. Be creative. Nothing is set in stone!
- When you are done, hit [STOP] then [ZERO] then [PLAY]
- Listen to your multitrack recording. Be it brilliant or crap, you have recorded a song!
There is a very good chance you are not happy with what you have recorded. If you are sure that you never want to hear it again, you can
rerecord at any time. Just remember that there is no going back.
